Fire!

The sky was an ominous black and there were gusty winds. I trudged back home, begrudging the weather. “Why did it have to be such a boring day?” PE had been cancelled because of the bad weather. As I used Herculean strength to carry my school bag, I longed for a little excitement.

Minutes later, I could finally see my neighbourhood. I was taken aback when the pungent odour of something burnt stung my nose. The smell got stronger as I neared my house. Something was burning!

When I finally saw my block, I could see flames engulfing my neighbour’s unit. It was a chaotic scene altogether with choking black smog pouring from the unit. Fire licked the walls with vengeance. Not long after, the fire spread along the corridors, consuming the litter left along them. Our house would be the next victim!

My eyes lost focus as the smoke caused tears to well up in them. I saw the firefighters battle the fire courageously as sweat poured from their faces. I could not help hoping for a miracle. The chaos thickened as people started jumping when the fire spread to their houses. I was horrified at what was happening. The people landed with a dull thud on the floor.

Just then, Heaven's floodgates opened. Rain started pouring and the fire diminished and diminished until it was extinguished. I was dumbstruck as my prayer had been answered. By then, my shirt reeked of smoke and was sweat-stained. I heaved a sigh of relief as I saw the firefighters patting one another on the back and the smoke wafting in the aftermath of the fire. The horrific scene of people jumping to their deaths flashed, back and forth, to and fro, in my mind.

The scene was seared into my mind as I could always see the burnt marks and peeled paint everyday at home. It was a terrible incident altogether and one that I would remember for a long time.

Fire!

I strode briskly along the pavement, glancing occasionally at the swiftly gathering dark clouds. I hastened my pace as I approached my block. Suddenly, I smelt a sharp odour. I sniffed again, and I identified the smell - smoke.

I glanced around, trying to find the source of the smoke. A bright flash of orange caught my attention.  A restaurant was in flames! I heard some screaming inside and the door of the restaurant burst open as a large crowd of diners scurried out. Out of the blue, an ear-splitting explosion reverberated through the air. I watched in horror as some people were flung out of the restaurant. The passers-by started panicking and some pleaded for help.

By the time the firefighters arrived, the flames had turned into a raging inferno. The fire had spread to nearby buildings and many people were fleeing from the scene. The fire-fighters stood stoically in front of the burning inferno to fulfil their duties. They, dressed smartly in their black coats and orange helmets, started to aim their hoses at the fire, but to no avail. The fiery blanket continued spreading outwards, razing everything within reach.

When all hopes seemed lost, another shower of water descended, this time not from the firefighters' hoses but from the sky. The rain started dampening the area. Hope was regained by the firefighters and they continued to work tirelessly to extinguish the fire.

Finally, the last flame was put out and a collective sigh of relief rippled through the crowd of onlookers. The police investigations then started and police officers trudged through the charred remains of the buildings. Although everyone was saddened by the damage caused, we took solace in the fact that there were no deaths and the fire was eventually extinguished.

A Nasty Encounter

I scanned the food centre, looking desperately for a seat while holding a plate of chicken rice. The hordes of people there were enough to send someone running back home, not to mention the insanely din of the incessant chatter. I was in luck. Seeing a man rising from his seat, I dashed over quickly before anyone could take the seat.

As the delicious aroma of the chicken rice wafted to my nose, I sighed in satisfaction and was about to tuck in to my food when a shout startled me. “Get over here! My table is in a mess!” a lady’s voice boomed out. Looking around me curiously, I saw that the shout came from a lady seated a few tables away. Immaculately dressed, she wore thick make-up, a huge diamond ring on her finger and was carrying a branded handbag. She was fanning herself away frantically with a scowl on her face. Her boorish behaviour was a direct contrast to her appearance. Within seconds, an old cleaner who was pushing a trolley overloaded with dirty dishes rushed over to her table. Without delay, he proceeded to clean the lady’s table. However, the lady continued to nag and scold the cleaner, saying that he was too slow and clumsy.

My frustration mounted as the lady continued ranting and raving away at the cleaner. I could not tolerate her behaviour anymore. Plucking up my courage, I walked over to her and said,” Excuse me for interfering but I cannot stand your behaviour towards the cleaner. Can’t you see the huge lunch-time crowd and how the cleaner is the only one cleaning the tables? He is trying his best already.”

The lady glared at me with eyes so bulging they reminded me of a toad’s. She stood up, jaw stubborn and shrieked,” Since you care for this cleaner so much, why don’t you clean up for him!”

Taken aback by her retort, I was indignant and left speechless. Fortunately, some of the patrons around me started to speak up for the cleaner too. A middle-aged man beside me even loudly criticised her for behaving like a hooligan. The lady was outraged and was almost in tears. However, she was unrepentant. “I don’t want to eat here with hooligans like all of you!” With that, she grabbed her handbag and with her nose high, made a quick exit out of the food centre on her three-inch high heels. Along the way, she almost tripped and fell, sending the onlookers into hoots of laughter.

The middle-aged man, who had criticized the lady earlier, came up to me, patted me firmly on the back and said, “You are brave to stand up to the lady!” I blushed, surprised at the compliment. The old cleaner also held my hands gratefully in his two hands. Seeing the grateful look on his face, I knew that I had done the right thing. Thinking back at what had happened, I was surprised at my own bravery!

An Unexpected Heroine

“Oh Dad! This place is awesome! I love the food here! I gushed.

“Yes…Indeed, we should…” My father’s sentence was rudely interrupted by loud shouts.

My whole family looked around curiously. A few tables away, two men were having an argument. One was tall, skinny and well-dressed while the other was short and plump with unkempt hair. Apparently, they were arguing over a table.

“Give me back the seat! I came here first. Get lost! You fatty!” the skinny man hollered.

“What did you call me? You bamboo pole! I sat here first! The “fatty” bellowed. The enraged thin man started hurling expletives at the plump man. The plump man was incensed. Without warning, he picked up a chair and held it over the other man’s head. Audible gasps could be heard. A shiver ran down my spine as a thousand “what if’s” ran through my mind. “What if he kills? What if I were hurt?”

Not wanting any misfortunes to happen, I put up a brave front and walked towards the two men. My heart was in my mouth as I said meekly,” Excuse me?”

“What!” boomed the unanimous reply by both men. I recoiled momentarily but I gathered up my courage and said in a quivering voice,” Why don’t you sit together and share the table instead of fighting over it? There are two seats, aren’t there?”

There was an unbearable silence as all eyes were directed on me by now. “What have I done?” I thought to myself. Fearing that the two men would come after me, I retreated to my seat without a word. As I settled down into my seat, I expected to be chided by my parents for being a ‘busybody’. To my surprise, my parents patted me on my back and said I had done the right thing. “Look,” my father said, pointing to the two men.

Turning back, to my amazement and relief, the two men were sharing the table. However, their heads were down as they gobbled down their food in double-quick time. My unease melted away to relief. I had done the right thing.

An Unwelcome Visitor

“The End,” I read as I finished reading the story to my seven-year-old brother, Jack. When I looked up from the book, he was already fast asleep. My parents had gone for a dinner function and left me to babysit Jack. “Finally. I can do my homework in peace,” I thought as I stretched myself wearily and walked to my bedroom.

Suddenly, an ear-piercing scream rang in my ears, sending a chill down my spine. It came from Jack’s room. Was there a ghost? Or a burglar? There was only one way to find out. I plucked up my courage and approached the room gingerly. The distance from my bedroom to Jack’s seemed very long, though it was just a few metres away.

I took a deep breath before flinging the door open. I was very surprised to see that the light was on. Jack was jumping up and down the bed, screaming away hysterically. “Lizard! Lizard! It fell on my shoulder when I was sleeping! Kill it!” he shrieked. I heaved a sigh of relief. It was just a lizard! Just then, I saw the lizard crawling down the bed and onto the floor. Jack screamed again as I tried to hit it using a magazine. Unfortunately, the lizard was too fast for me. It crawled up to the ceiling and out of reach.

No matter how I tried to persuade Jack to just ignore the lizard and sleep, he would not listen. “Come on, the lizard is so small. We do not need to fear it.” I told him dismissively as I rolled my eyes.

“I am still scared! I don’t want to sleep here!” Jack cried, shaking his head vigorously. Left with no other choices, I asked him to sleep in my room while I slept in his. Jack agreed straightway and rushed to occupy my bed before I could change my mind.

Sighing, I shook my head and thought how silly it was that Jack should get so worked up over a lizard. As I was lying on his bed, about to doze off, I suddenly felt something on my shoulder. I opened my eyes and saw a grey, scaly creature looking up at me. “Lizard! Lizard! Help!” I screamed.

An Encounter with Loan Sharks

“Ping! …” a shrill sound rang out, shattering the tranquil silence in the neighbourhood. It was followed by a booming voice, “Pay up or you will regret it!”

It had been another typical day. I was walking home from school as usual. However, the commotion told me it would not be a normal day.

Loan sharks! Instinctively, I scampered and hid behind a pillar. Casting a glance towards the loansharks, I saw them raining punches on a man. The gang leader was sinister-looking, with a scar on his brow. His pockmarked face was glistening with sweat. A tattoo of a ship on the back of his left hand reminded me of the ruthless gangsters I saw on movies. I cringed at the sight of him.

Not bearing to see the man getting hurt anymore, I whipped out my phone and punched the numbers ‘999’. “Hello! Somebody is being beaten up very badly. Please come immediately.” This place is 286D Jurong…” Before I could finish my sentence, someone grabbed my phone and tossed it on the ground. I looked up. They were the loansharks! For one heart-stopping moment, I thought I was doomed.

The leader lifted my name tag. “Hmm... Jake Long! Seems that our ancestors are brothers! My name is Ah Long. What a small world!” he said sarcastically. The gang sniggered evilly. “Ah Eng!” The leader called out. Ah Eng gave the leader a glass bottle. I trembled like a leaf in the wind when he grabbed my hand and lifted the glass bottle. I closed my eyes, thinking that was the end of me. The headline, “Child, 10, killed by loansharks for calling the police” flashed through my mind.

“Stop that at once!” a voice yelled. I opened my eyes and heaved a sigh of relief. It was the police! Grabbing the golden opportunity, I shook my hand free and ran for my dear life. I ran towards the police and hid behind them, as timid as a mouse.

After a short chase, the loansharks were apprehended. As they were led away to the police car, they cursed me under their breath. A police woman comforted me and I told her what had happened. Stroking my hand, she praised me for my bravery. I was beaming with pride. After that, I bade farewell to the police woman and scurried home, not even daring to turn back to take another look at the loansharks.
